It may be of interest to all you coin dealers(especially in U.S.) to check out Tia's post in open forum Coins & Banknotes. Disturbing.

Disturbing in what way? Return policies vary and some are idiotic. Or, if you referring to the dearth of sales, that's usually due to overpricing.

    Hi Goldsovereign:

Have a question for you concerning the shipping of coins internationally. The USPS "International Mail Manual" #134 Valuable Articles section indicates that "Valuable Articles" can only be mailed by "Registered First Class Mail International" ; "Registered Priority Mail International Flate Rate Envelope" ; or ""Insured Priority Mail International". They identified coins, banknotes, currency, checks, drafts, traveler's checks; manufactured platinum, gold, silver; precious stones; jewelry (of more than nominal value), jewels, and watches. They also included a country by country listing of mailing requirements and mailing prohibitions.

Comparing their guidelines to Ebid's list of approved countries in relationship to shipping coins, banknotes, etc. internationally:

    Australia/New Zealand [Not Allowed]

Canada[Coins sent between dealers/collectors ok; No Gold, incl Dust
    Danmark [Allowed]
    Deutchland/Germany [Allowed]
Espana/Spain [Only in Insured Priority Mail International Parcels]
    Finland[Allowed]
France [No Gold, unless Addressee has permit from Bank of France ]
Ireland [Only Gold & Silver ]
Italia/Italy [Must be Insured Priority Mail, regardless of value]
Nederlands [Prohibited in Express Mail International]

Norge/Norway [No Norwegian Coins or Banknotes, unless addressee has authorization from National Bank of Norway]

South Africa [Only Registered First Class International]
Svierge/Sweden [Value must be less than 100 Swedish crowns]

United Kingdom [Must be Registered First Class; or Insured Priority Mail; and Prohibited in Express Mail

They did not include a definition or any criterior for defining "Valuable Articles"; they also made no definitive statement that "All coins are included under the category "Valuable Articles".

Are you aware of any written criterior that would designate a coin, banknote, etc. as "valuable"? What value do you ascribe to a coin, that would determine if you would mail it via regular mail or if you would send it registered or insured (both locally & internationally)?

I used to sell alot of gold and platinum bullion; and refused to mail to buyer unless insured (included in s/h fee). No questions asked or entertained. Ebid seems to discourage requiring insurance; but this smacks in the face of international requirements and prohibitions of shipping precious metals, etc.

Anyone else having concrete factual information on this topic is asked to respond. Feel free to comment on the accuracy of this information or provide more information.

    Thank you.

    ~Burgyeb~
