Re: Product Attribute Additions to Categories
Rather than proliferate attributes, the solution for mixed lots is not to use the attribute.
Nobody is going to look specifically for "mixed".
Re: Product Attribute Additions to Categories
Well I agree that there are far too many subcategories. My items stop selling when I used categories such as Olympics in stamps which divide into years and winter/summer and olympics/paraolympics. The deep subcategories are a dead area, so I stopped using them and sales picked up again.

Which was my point in #2. User driven categories is what mainly led to the proliferation of categories on the site.
Stamps, in particular, suffered from this as no two sellers could agree on what categories were needed to list stamps. Even between different countries (particularly UK/US) their was a mismatch on what was condidered the 'correct' form.
My concern is that the same will happen to attributes if they are user driven.

If attributes are to be used, just having "Mint" and "Used" will be insufficient. If that is all there are, sellers would not be able to assign attributes to lots which include mint and used stamps. I don't like the idea of attributes very much anyway.

For Sure!!!! When I want to find a shirt to match a pair of pants I like to look for MY size and the color I have in mind.

So long as we are allowed to do that.
The "users" disagree is not a helpful comment. The USA/UK thing is valid - the standard catalogues organise things differently, but the main problem is ignoring those who know what they are talking about. If Bill and I disagree about stamp cats, it is in the margins - mostly we both know what we are talking about. The biggest problems are caused by ignoring expertise. I would be perfectly happy to be ignored by eBid so long as the person they don't ignore knows what they are talking about.

Similarly, if Madelaine, Bill and I disagree it is to a minor minor degree. The UK and the USA do do things differently but, for that matter, so do the French, Germans and the Spanish. We should not ignore Europe. Personally I sell far more stamps to Europe than I do to the USA.
I agree with Madelaine, eBid should consult the major sellers in all categories before making changes. Making changes to copy another site is not valid.
Re: Product Attribute Additions to Categories
My suggestion for the clothes colours would be to list the common colours in a drop down, but also have a free-text option for fashionable colours. Each season the fashion industry comes out with a different palette of colours - it may look like red, but it is a different shade of red from last year. Many times I have bought items from a catalogue in consecutive seasons and the colour looks the same but on close examination with the original from last season there is a subtle change.

I don't think this will work
