Lin might be worth a try

To print in black only you will need to click Start > Control Panel > Printers & Faxes. Right click your EPSON icon and select Printing Preferences. In the Printing Preferences window you should already be in the MAIN tab. Click the Advanced button located in the bottom right hand corner. Click continue if prompted to do so. On the left hand side of this new advanced menu you should see the option for "Black Ink Only" or "GreyScale". Tick this check box and then click OK. The printer will now be fully configured to print in black only.

What she said. I was just coming back to report that, and not looking forward to typing it all. Thanks Shezz.

What I'm not at all sure about is if that means no colour printing at all, or just no colour mixing... but do let us know what happens!

For what it's worth, mine's unticked and I definitely get through black so if plan A doesn't work, try unticking again to see if just doing that rejigs things enough!
