They are looking for water (H2O Hydrogen and Oxygen ) .

If they find it it can be used to manufacture rocket fuel for missions to mars and beyond.
If they can't find water it could all end up as being a damp squib! (excuse the pun)

The reasoning is that a collision will cause vibration within the moon and this can be measured and interpreted (looking for water ice)
It's called a seismic survey.
