Agree with #4. Employers have a legal obligation to ensure that they are employing people who have the right to work in this country and can face heavy penalties for employing illegals.
The only reason I can think of for providing financial information at the interview stage is that the data entry position is one that requires a full credit check. Unless you have been advised otherwise, it sounds as though the data may be finance-related so if you want the job, take your bank paperwork with you and ask questions before you hand over copies.

I phoned them this morning, and told them I was not comfortable, handing out that amount of personnel information.

Turns out it's an employment agency.

All the info is so they can "put me on their books"

It's funny, but I thought "sounds more like an agency fishing for bodies" but figured you'd know if that was the case... I shouldn't assume, should I? ;o))

What they are asking for sounds about right. I work in a government recruitment agency (we recruit doctors to be trained in hospitals). We ask for all those plus more to verify experience and identity.

Since 9/11 all employers have to verify the identity of their employers, and if they are found guilty of employing illegal workers they can be fined or closed down.

I have been working in the same department for 14 years now and last year they demanded proof of who I was; before giving me an ID card to access information on the computer. Yes it is madness, the bombers in Spain sometime ago were if I remember correctly all found to have genuine IDs, so effectively it solves nothing . But we have to live with it.
